2000 Bunny Run Rally – The Rallymasters’ Closing Comments

This has been the second Bunny Run that we have planned, our goal for this rally was to thread the New York/Connecticut border to the most eastern point in Westchester. We selected the most serpentine roads to get there and back. Actually, the whole rally was planned around one road that we drove on about 6 months ago, the road that had the 13 arrows was a surprise while driving around North Stamford trying to get lost. We wrote the name of the road on a scrap of paper that stayed in the glove compartment of Barbara’s Acura for half a year. When we decided to plan the Bunny Run, we immediately dug out the paper with Farms Road written on it and found the road on the map. Planning the rally route is always a lot of fun for Jesse. Barbara really enjoys hiding the Bunny signs. She wasn’t so happy this year, 5 cars found ALL of the Bunny Signs. You folks are in for it next year if we plan the 2001 Bunny Run. There were 39 Bunny signs on the route, we recovered 38 the following Sunday morning. We will also try to get better weather for next years rally, three of the past four WSCC rallies have been in the rain and fog.

The general response at the finish line was positive, the only complaint that was voiced was regarding our definition of “and follow”. One couple felt that the words “and follow” should have been an executed instruction, we felt that it was guidance until the subsequent instruction could have been executed. In fact, our general instruction even described it that way. The most common mistake was the “Right at T” which should have placed you on Old Long Ridge Road, several couples made the right one block too early. That mistake put you on Long Ridge Road looking for “Hidden Drives”, hopefully when you didn’t find it in 5 miles you would have turned around and found your mistake.

Actually, the longest distance between instructions was only 3.1 miles. For those that didn’t make it to Applebee’s, the actual rally distance was 66.4 miles and the correct time was 2 hours 28 minutes and 0 seconds. There were 13 arrow signs on Farms Road, including one on a dead end sign on the left side. One car finished 80 seconds off the actual time, unfortunately they missed a bunny and the bonus question.

We enjoyed planning this rally, and wish to thank Frank Cardone for prerunning it and working the checkpoint with us, Debbi and Gary Kanzler for registration, Kim Samson and Ed McGuirk for hanging out at Applebee’s waiting for stray ralliests and Applebee’s for welcoming our weary travelers.

There has been some talk about a day time rally in the summer, if the planners need help hiding bunnies, Barbara will be glad to rent a Cherry Picker, she might even devise a “Bunny Boat” to float the signs into a reservoir. If anyone would like to help plan a rally, we welcome all assistance, let a club member know of your interest. We will see you all at the Halloween Rally in October, until then we are off to find that one road to plan next years rally around…

Your Rallymasters,
Jesse Lipscher and Barbara Gebala
